Sprouting through concrete
Invitation
We would like to invite you to participate in a public art project along with an exhibition held at Visible Records. Visible Records is an artist-run gallery and studio space in Charlottesville, VA. The art installation is a collaboration between artists, community members, and incarcerated people. This call for submissions is only open to currently incarcerated individuals. Submissions can also be made on behalf of those currently incarcerated.
Participation
To participate please respond to one of the six prompts below on a sheet of paper. Your response can be a drawing, letter, text, poem, or anything you want it to be as long as it fits onto the sheet of paper.
Prompts:
What does community care look like?
What does your best day look like?
Who is your neighbor?
How do you express love?
What would it feel to be free?
Imagine your own garden?
In your response, please let us know what question you are replying to. You are also welcome to include an artist description.
If you feel comfortable, you are invited to include your name, age, prison location, and time in prison.
Selection Process
-Based on the submissions, three Images will be selected for a 6 ft x 8 ft banner that will be displayed for a month each. The banner will be placed in front of Visible Records and function as a billboard.
-Six submissions will be selected for sidewalk signs, and placed in public spaces around Charlottesville, VA.
-If your artwork is selected and sold, the donation of the sale will go toward your commissary.
-A selection of images will also be displayed as part of the larger exhibition.
-There is potential for further projects to come out of this project, such as an art book or postcards made from submissions. If you do not want your submission to be used for a purpose other than the project listed above, please specify that when you mail your submission. Artists will be given credit for all work no matter the project.
